Dominican Center Bookshelf: Infinite Country (Online)

“Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with
God’s people and also members of this household” ~Ephesians 2:19

Join a community of curious learners for 3 evenings in March as we unpack the harsh realities of immigration through the powerful novel, Infinite Country, by Patricia Engel.

At the dawn of the new millennium, Colombia is a country devastated by half a century of violence. Elena and Mauro are teenagers when they meet, their young love an antidote to the mounting brutality of life in Bogotá. Once their first daughter is born, and facing grim economic prospects, they set their sights on the United States.

This book takes us to the heart of the immigrant experience as the couple and their baby immigrate to the United States leaving all that is familiar behind. Their struggle with fundamental questions may nudge you to explore your own challenges these times present:

What is home?
Who is family?
What does hope look like to a family who must let go of all that is known and comfortable?

Every nation, every community has its own stories. Every family and each individual has its own stories. We define ourselves by the stories we’re told about who we are, our history, our ancestry and what makes us.

We will reflect and discuss how both parents and their children navigate the challenges of their lives where they are often seen as “the other.” As this family experiences two different countries and inhabits two different worlds they encounter the complicated dynamics immigration embodies. Engel approaches some hard truths about immigration with honesty, empathy, and generosity.

Is there a story tucked in your heart from childhood that continues to remain meaningful to you?

As we journey toward the American Dream where many triumphs are shadowed by regret and family love flounders, what might the characters teach us in our own experiences?

We invite you to read the full book ahead of the first session and keep the book with you through the entire series as we will pull excerpts from the book in each session.

The book is not included in the price of registration. You may purchase it from Amazon, or purchase at any of your local book stores.
